Heroic Knight’s Broadsword and Baldrick

Heroic Knight’s Broadsword and Baldrick

Swords like this were wielded by Knight’s as they went to war against the enemies of their lord. Such was the power of these men that common folk believed it was their swords that must have magic powers. Troubadours told stories of long past Kings who owned magic Broadswords, like Arthur of the Britons and his beloved ‘Excalibur’. In myth and tale, a magic sword has often been broken by evil and must be mended by fairy folk so the young hero may prevail.

Warrior’s Broadsword and Baldrick

Warrior’s Broadsword and Baldrick

This was the sword of the dark age warrior and then later of the medieval castle guard. They were prized by all warriors and were often given as gifts from a lord to his bravest of followers. In myth and tale, only a warrior armed with a broadsword could defeat the monster when it attacked the Mead Hall, or the dragon when it enslaved the maid. A smaller sword would not be able to cut down the thorny vines in wild woods.

Heroic Knight’s Lance

Heroic Knight’s Lance

This was the first weapon of the medieval knight as he bravely rode headlong at his foe. In myth and tale, questing knights, with lance in hand, would often come to the aid of the weak, humble, and of course, the beautiful. A common play, acted in medieval times, was Sir George defeating the evil dragon to save the maid of innocence. Never run or ride a bike with this toy and only attack dragons in the guise of old boxes.

Warrior’s Gladius Short Sword

Warrior’s Gladius Short Sword

Short, broad bladed swords were made for one purpose - fighting hand-to-hand, up close, in tight fought battlelines. The Romans were the first in Britain to use this sort of sword. Knights in the middle ages also used this sword as a second blade if they lost or broke their broadsword. In myth and tale, the stout and strong, dwarven warrior is often armed with a sword like this (ideal for fighting goblins in tunnels and underground halls).

Warrior’s Broad Dirk

Warrior’s Broad Dirk

This was the small second blade carried by ancient soldiers, important dark age warriors and medieval knights. For all of them it was their last weapon of defence. They would have worn their broad dirk at all times, so as not to be caught by surprise without any means of protection. In tales, this was the small blade hidden in clothing just before brigands took the hero prisoner - he would use it late when he saw a chance to force his escape.
