7 PIN BAR SKITTLES

7 PIN BAR SKITTLES

Smaller then the 9 pin bar skittles, this is the ideal family after dinner table game. Historically; this is a Georgian genteel version of the popular working folk game of board skittles, played on the ground or on a boarded alley behind the village pub. First played by rich fops at tables in Coffee Houses where wagers of vast sums were won and lost at this petty game in its early years. By Victorian times it had gone from a high stakes gentleman's club game to an after dinner game and finally family parlour favourite.

Spindle Top

Historically; this toy has changed little from the household tool that inspired it. The drop spindle was used to weigh down wool as it was teased, the spindle spun and the wool became yarn. With little doubt spindle tops were first made from broken drop spindles. Just hold the handle, pull the string and watch it go.

Quoits

Quoits

Historically; this game was played in Roman times. We do not know about its use in the Dark Ages but in the Middle Ages Quoits were being made from new straw at Harvest time and played by both adults and children once the harvest was in. By Tudor/Stuart times sailors on becalmed seas would make rope quoits and play on deck. When these sailors had shore leave they took this game home to their families.
