Active Role-Play

Where be dragons! It has been well remarked by today’s educationalists that early active role-play develops imagination and social skills better than any other activity! This section is all about active, imaginative, enacting play - be that with historic roles or characters from favourite stories, like Peter Pan, Harry Potter, Gandalf and the like - its about shared personal make-believe worlds of adventure! To enable such play children need safe, robust toys like these; many will be treasured keepsakes long after the adventures of childhood are over.

Archer’s Crossquillan and Baldrick

Archer’s Crossquillan and Baldrick

Archers do not usually depend on a sword to do battle in the same way as a man-at-arms, but all archers should have a sword. If enemy men-at-arms manage to scale the castle walls, or if an enemy knight gets through the archer on the battle field, this sword would be needed. In myth and tale, when his last arrow is spent, a goodly archer, with sword in hand, will fight to the last against evil warriors and goblins.

Champion's Lance

Champion's Lance

Historically: the lance was the first weapon of the medieval knight. He would ride headlong at his enemy with his lance at a tilt so that it pointed directly in front of his Warhorse. To ride in this way demanded great courage, but to stand before a charging knight required even more. In myth and tale: questing champions would often come to the aid of people in great fear of some huge evil beast (Sir George defeating the red dragon to save the maid of innocence was but one such champion). Remember not all dragons were bad; Puff was a dragon who lived by the sea, ate fish and loved the company of children. Note: this lance is only to be used against evil monsters in the guise of old boxes and only with adult permission. Never ride a bike with this toy, use either a hobbyhorse or imaginary mount! Wizards Staff Of Power

Wizards Staff Of Power

Historically: staffs as totems of power are as ancient as civilisation itself, used by powerful pagan shaman to direct their spirit magic. They still remain in British folk dance but have diminished to be no more than the Morris Dance leader's staff of office. In myth and tale: only White Wizards and White Witches of great and goodly power could master a Staff of Magic. Magic Wand

Magic Wand

Gnarled Spiral Shaft (no photo can do it justice) Historically: wands were always magic. In pre-history the tribal shaman would use a wand branch to cast and dispel spirit magic while shaking bells to shield the shaman from magic attack. In medieval Christian times the old pagan shaman and his/her wand and bells had been turned into the comical court jester. In myth and tale: almost all beings with magic powers used a wooden wand to cast and dispel magic. Wands were not made by human hand but by fairy folk, from the branch of a tree, and dropped to be found by the right person. This most necessary aid to a magic user is still an important part of modern day tales of magic, such as J.K.Rowling's 'Harry Potter' stories. 20cm/ 52"long

Travellers Walking Stick

Travellers Walking Stick

Lumpy, bumpy, twisted stick (no photo can do it justice) Historically: walking sticks were symbols of the questing traveller and the journeying pilgrim. In illustrations of the birth of Christ, the three wise men from afar are often depicted with such a stick in the left hand, their gift in the right. Illustrations of saintly travellers like St. Christopher also show them with a travelling walking stick. In myth and tale: the ragged traveller with the walking stick may actual be a powerful mage or even a god. Odin, the ruler of all pagan Norse gods was said to walk the earth in human form as a one-eyed beggar with a walking stick; he would test people's charity towards the poor and sickly by how they treated him as a human beggar. Even in tales, travellers with long hard journeys, like Dick Whittington and more recently Frodo and Sam (J.R.Tolkien's fairytale questing travellers) have had travelling walking sticks to lean on. 78cm/ 30"long
